2.2 Safe to install
Theodolite was an early adopter of augmented reality (AR) technology for iOS since its launch in 2009 - pioneering AR features long before it became a popular term. Over the years, Theodolite has been embraced by numerous consumers and professionals during their outdoor expeditions and work endeavors. Now, the concept of Theodolite has been successfully transitioned to the Apple Watch, integrating a compass, inclinometer, GPS, and maps into a single essential application that can be conveniently accessed right from your wrist. There is a sense of enthusiasm in pushing the boundaries of this age-old instrument by adapting it to newer device platforms, leveraging advancements in hardware and software technologies.
On iPhones and iPads, Theodolite adopts a viewfinder interface, harmonizing various device sensors (such as GPS, magnetometer, gyro, and accelerometer) with the camera. When used on the Apple Watch, Theodolite blends information from these sensors into an AHRS (attitude and heading reference system) display reminiscent of what one would encounter in the cockpit of a modern aircraft. This layout enables Theodolite to showcase compass bearings (yaw angle), pitch angle, roll angle, along with GPS-derived latitude, longitude, altitude data, as well as sun and moon positions efficiently in a compact presentation suited for a small screen.
A notable addition in Theodolite for Watch version 2 is the introduction of a map screen and waypoint manager. Users can effortlessly add waypoints on the map or pinpoint their exact location, subsequently viewing waypoints on the compass ring to visualize their bearings from the current location.
The application offers users the ability to customize settings to their preference, including selecting compass modes (true or magnetic orientation, degrees or mils), distance/altitude units (feet or meters), and position formats (decimal degrees, degrees-minutes-seconds, MGRS, USNG, UTM, UTM-B, and Maidenhead Locator System). Furthermore, users have the option to display an artificial horizon on the app's interface (linked to pitch and roll) and can define the level reference to flat or vertical orientations of their Apple Watch. The app provides six distinct color schemes, encompassing two night vision modes - midnight red and luminescent green.
Theodolite for Watch is best suited for Apple Watch Series 5 and subsequent models (including Ultra), as earlier versions lack a compass sensor and won't display compass data. On older devices without this sensor, the app utilizes the gyro sensor for rotational measurements. Users can adjust and calibrate the gyro by twisting the digital crown on the Apple Watch to align with the sun position, moon position, or a known bearing - enabling precise bearing readings. Calibration can be performed as frequently as needed for accurate outcomes.
The application provides accuracy reports based on the magnetometer sensor within your Apple Watch. For enhanced accuracy, it is recommended to operate Theodolite away from magnets, electronics, or sources of electromagnetic interference like car dashboards, aircraft cockpits, metal structures, and other devices.
Continuing our commitment to enhancing user experiences with our applications, we are dedicated to evolving Theodolite for Watch continually. We encourage users to share feature requests, suggestions, as well as overall feedback with us. Your input is imperative as we strive to improve our offerings!
